Interview:
For as long as I can remember, music has a profound impact on my life. To me, there is something about music that is so powerful. I think it has the ability to move and impact us far beyond words. We might have a particular thought, feeling or emotion we are going through, and I believe there is a song for every season of life. I am a Christian, and I know throughout my own spiritual journey that music has been a driving force in strengthening my faith and spurring me on in my Christian walk. God and music have both been instrumental in who I am and the person I have become. I remember as a teenager, I was introduced to Contemporary Christian musicians such as Keith Green, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Rich Mullins, The Imperials, Petra, The Resurrection Band, and other artists like them, who were sharing the Gospel message through song. As a young adult, I would attend Christian concerts with my youth group. We also incorporated the songs and music from many of those artists into different drama presentations we would perform, and I would also sing some of their songs when I sang solos at church.
Fast forward a few years later. I attended a Christian college, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Since graduation, I have held various marketing and advertising jobs in Christian radio, publishing, and I have also written for a number of different publications. In addition to my full-time jobs, I have always been a freelance writer. One particular day, I picked up a copy of Heaven’s Metal, now called HM Magazine, and said to myself, “I’d like to write for this magazine”. That moment was a pivotal point in my writing career. Throughout the course of my life, God has always been molding me and shaping me into the person He wanted me to become. I always loved Him, music, and writing, but early on, I didn’t know exactly where that would take me. Yet, He knew the desires of my heart from the beginning. It’s been exciting for me to walk in faith and see God’s plan unfold in my own life. He has that same kind of plan for each of our lives. For me, music has been one of the fundamental things that is at the core of who I am.
Today, I have written five books, including “Changed: True Stories Of Finding God Through Christian Music”, and thousands of feature articles, and CD reviews about a variety of different artists and genres, as well as articles on a variety of other topics. I also write entertainment features for a daily newspaper. Music, my dreams, and God have taken me to a lot of different places, and I have made many fond memories. I have had the opportunity to do a lot of things I never thought I would be able to do, such as meeting President George W. Bush. I hope my story will inspire you as you read this; to plant seeds, have goals, dream big dreams, and take steps in your life that will lead you toward your goals and the fulfillment of your dreams. For me, I believed in the power of those things. I mixed hard work and talent with my faith. But, ultimately, it is God’s power that made it a reality. Life is a journey, and I believe music is something that will carry each of us throughout the various seasons of life: highs, lows, and everything in between. Music is also a reminder to me of God’s power, and how He can take someone ordinary, and do extraordinary things. Romans 9:14-24 is my favorite scripture relating to that, and I know God is using me for His greater purposes.
