Interview:

To understand the spiritual significance of music, we need to understand that we live our lives in a physical realm, and a spiritual realm. There is the world that we see, feel, and hear; the world you see when you walk out your front door or swim in the ocean. Then there is a world that is unseen to the naked eye; it is a world where battles are won or lost, where bonds are formed and broken, and where walls are built up and torn down. However, these two realms are not separate; they are not moving along in parallel to each other. In fact, they are completely intertwined. An event in one realm has the power to cause things to happen in the other, and this is where music is so important. Music and lyrics are the only thing that can cut from one realm to another. The power of the spoken word is so immense that it can create or destroy a life, depending on the spirit it is spoken in. As a Christian, I believe in a God who decided to do everything with a word. The creation of the world, the prophets, healing and deliverance, psalms, they all share a common theme: the spoken word. When a band gets on stage and does their thing, they are essentially “speaking” over however many people happen to be listening. Whatever message they are putting out through their music has an effect on the audience in a physical, and spiritual sense, whether it is life or death. Every musician needs to come to the realization that their words and music are having a positive or negative effect on people, whether they want them to or not. It is up to them to make this effect a positive one, to speak life and not death, love and not hate, and to encourage people instead of crippling them. This is how music changes lives, and this is the spiritual significance of music.

“Every musician needs to come to the realization that their words and music are having a positive or negative effect on people.”
