Interview:
When one creates art or music, one loses track of time and enters a trance state that heals the body and the mind. One cannot experience pain or disease when one is in this state. I know this from my experience as a surgeon and artist. Playing music in the operating room helped everyone to heal. The patient experienced less pain, fewer drugs were needed, and the operation finished in less time. When one enters a trance state, the past doesn’t exist, and so love and forgiveness are the result, as well as freedom from fear.
Art and music connect us with creation and our creator. The rhythm and harmony of music and art help us to heal, find tranquility, and meditate so that we reach a state where we are connected with the loving, intelligent, conscious energy of creation.
As an artist, I learned to see the truth through my paintings and the dreams and drawings of my patients. I painted myself as a surgeon completely covered with cap, mask, and gown at a time in my life when I needed to uncover my spirituality and be free of the pain I experienced as a surgeon who couldn’t cure and fix everything. I ended up shaving my head and ultimately realized that, like the monks, I needed to uncover my spirituality and not just the skin of my head. My painting taught me a great deal and awakened me to the truth. The unconscious speaks to us in dreams and drawings. That is the art of creation and how our body and soul communicate with the creator of life.
