Interview:

What is the spiritual significance of music? When I first looked at this question I thought: “This is a strange question! Music is no more ‘spiritually significant’ than anything else”. Music is significant to people, Christian and non-Christian alike, it has meaning, provokes thought and emotion at best, or it can simply entertain. Music is not “spiritually significant” per se, as it is just a collection of notes. It only becomes spiritually significant when it is directed to, written about or for God, both in a positive or negative way.

It is possible for us to put too much emphasis, importance, and praise on the creation of a song, especially worship. We live in an era where worship leaders and songwriters in the church have become global celebrities, we want to know what they think, how they do what they do, and even what they eat for breakfast! Is this really such a good thing? So, music is a gift from God for our enjoyment and can be used as a tool for worshiping our Creator, and reaching people with a message. The music itself is not worship, our lives are worship. This is what makes music “spiritually significant”. As a songwriter and member of a band, who every night we 148 play, seek to challenge the crowd and point them toward God. Every time I write a song I look for divine help and a prophetic edge. I see that music is a very significant part of peoples lives, and connects with our very soul, and even our spirit.

Music, songwriting, worship leading, being in a band, it’s all good but we need to keep it in perspective. Writing a good worship song does not make you a better person or a better Christian! It just means that you wrote a good song, the song came from God, belongs to God, and only has meaning and significance because of God. Not because of the person who wrote it. Let’s keep worshiping God and make sure that songs, worship leaders, and bands don’t become idols. See, you got me started now!
