Interview:
Music is a form of expression that is recognized in scripture as having spiritual significance. We are thus encouraged to use music to express ourselves in prayer and praise. Music has the capacity to express emotion in a much more embellished sense. Victor Hugo said that, “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to remain silent”. A piece of music can express things that are beyond what verbal propositions can encapsulate. In this sense, music is the ideal medium to express anything related to God who Himself is beyond reason and language.
Spiritual truths carried forth in musical term express the rich notion of truth that scripture presents to us. Truth is not just a property of sentences; it is a property of people. Truth is more than what we say. Truth can be predicated of people and ultimately must be predicated of a person; the person of Jesus Christ. Whereas a theological proposition may give some expression to truth in its objectivity, it is limited in its capacity to express truth in its subjective manifestation. Through music we can experience objective truth as it is “embossed” into the subjectivity of the individual. This is 140 appropriated truth and it is really the only sort of truth there is. Jonathan Edwards said that, “True religion consists largely in the religious affections”. What this means is that true Christianity is a state of the heart. You can use words to tell me what you have in mind, but music is the most effective way for you to tell me what is in your heart. And if God dwells in your heart then I would recommend that you do what the apostle Paul tells us to do: “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord” [Ephesians 5:19].
“Music is a form of expression that is recognized in scripture as having spiritual significance.”
