Interview:

I think music is generally essential for spirituality. For example, every culture has used music, especially ancient ones who took music for interaction with their gods or the underworld. For some people music is essential for meditation. I myself need music to come down after a hard days of work, to free my mind, to think philosophic, or become creative in any way. It is important for me to gain a wider view on some things too. I can say music opens my mind, and after listening to music I really like, I often think differently about things.

Music is an art, which reveals itself in many different varieties. Music is a language. At concerts, music is the language understood by all people, indifferent to which nation they come from. You immediately feel that you are on the same cognitive level, no matter what social backgrounds you bring with you. Having the same musical interest you share a common good, which connects you with people you know nothing about. This is an ideal starting point to become acquainted with each other. Music must be more than language because of this common understanding. You could call it “ideology” if this term would not have been maculated by the horrors of the last century. Considering some rituals like headbanging, cheering, and moshing, you could call music a kind of universal religion, and indeed there are some people who believe in nothing but their music. If we observe the traditional religions, we can see that everywhere music seems to be an important aspect. Even the strict set of regulations of the Qur’an had not been able to prevent music to become a vital part of the Islamic world today. In a more personal view, music is a relaxation and a challenge at the same time. When the door of the rehearsal room closes, it is just me and my instrument, stronger than the troubles of the outside world. You see that even in a region shaken by human catastrophes like Iraq, where there was recently a Metal band founded. Therefore, music is an invincible issue essential for the equilibrium of humanity.

“Music is generally essential for spirituality.”
