Interview:
I believe that all material objects, including ourselves, are vibrations of frequencies and sound tones. The Big Bang was the beginning, or one of the beginnings, of these frequencies. Light, sound, and material objects all vibrate at various frequencies, just like musical notes do. So everything is music, some of these notes are simply too high or low for us to hear! When we compose or perform music, we tap into these frequencies and this is the basis of what is spiritual in music, which is also in a sense purely physical as well. There are also ties in music to our ancient and recent past, whether we search out a bone flute from our cave days, a viol da gamba from the Renaissance, a gong from Bali, a guitar from the Texas panhandle or even the newest soft synths. And of course, there is a fellowship of composers and musicians stretching into our past, some very famous and some more obscure. These human connections form a spiritual bond in time to some of the greatest creative and emotional minds of our species. When truly listening to music we vibrate and get in touch with the frequencies of all time. As Felix Mendelssohn said, “The meaning of music is too precise to be put into words”. Melody, harmony, instrumentation, frequencies, emotions, these all form the language of music which speaks directly to our body, mind, and spirit.
“When truly listening to music we vibrate and get in touch with the frequencies of all time.”
