Interview:
Music has a spiritual significance if one chooses to make it affect them in that way. I have always been touched to the depths of my being by music. Most people have songs that can bring tears to their eyes, make them happy, depressed, disgusted, enraged; the list could go on forever. Music can lift one up or break one down, depending not only on the music but how one’s emotions and mind interpret the music. To me, music is an expression of releasing primal emotions through wavelengths of sound. I also cannot help but think that if someone can relate to the music that someone else creates, that some spiritual connection is made, even if not purposely. The ability to essentially connect with someone who you have never met, and probably never will, through the outpouring of his or her emotions, through sound is quite a feat in itself. The best music is that which you can relate to in some way. It helps make it more of a personal affair, as opposed to just being some kind of static art form that passes through your ears. I have always found deep personal connections in listening to such obscure things as deep sub-harmonic drones, blast beats, field recordings, and noise. Some of which people may not instantly classify as “music” but is without a doubt the essential core of sound and music. Music when performed correctly, with passion and honesty, can touch one or a million lives in so many different ways than the artist may have originally planned or intended. When music or sound can evoke emotions and reactions to it, the spiritual connection has typically been achieved.
