The spiritual significance of music is a difficult thing to get a handle on. I guess the basis for belief is what will determine your opinion on this subject. I have been playing and singing professionally for over forty-five years, and have seen a lot of varied responses in clubs and concerts to different styles of music; enough to acknowledge music as a very powerful and influential vehicle for good and for evil. It has a way of reaching private areas of one’s heart, soul, and spirit. Depending on the lyrical content and groove, music brings with it a sense of support that can encourage you to follow through with actions related to one’s present inner feelings and emotions. I would say that music is way more than a physically expressed emotion and series of melodic notes. There is a mood attached by the songwriter who can be like a vessel or carrier, and then by the musicians that can be transferred and imparted to the hearer, and depending on the state of the listener is how this could have its effect. Some people listen to music that has high energy as they are requiring a soul or spirit lift. While others wish to be mellowed out, so they listen to easy mellow sounds as they are seeking rest and peace in their soul and spirit. So my thoughts are that music most definitely has a spiritual element.
