Spirituality in music? Religious or mystical? If it’s religious then I see an abundance in the world today, but if it’s mystical, then that’s a different story as I believe Western civilization has lost all connections with its spirituality allowing lesser advanced cultures the pleasure of retaining their connection with their ancestral roots and folklore in a much more concentrated and unspoilt manner. But I suspect the question is more a religious one and thus, we can all ascertain whatever spirituality we deem reasonable from whatever we chose to listen to or create ourselves. There is a huge Christian Metal scene in the world today but are all the bands actually “spiritual”? Well, maybe, but what about any other band who mentions any texts from the Bible or any other theological literature, do they hark spirituality? Or are they just having a rant and yelling about how the world has been tainted by religion? I think they’re ranting, and I love it, because that’s exactly what I do. I suppose, if a band announces to the world that they are spiritual, then we have to take that on board regardless if they sound like Savage Garden or Slayer. Music, like art, isn’t it all in the eye, or should that be ear, of the beholder? If you gain a spiritual high from devouring the tunes and soundscapes of any piece of music, then good for you, and no one can tell you otherwise.
