Music is possibly the most intangible of the arts. It seems to affect people in ways that are often not understood especially without the stimulus of words or the resurrection of memories produced by music. Everyone seems to enjoy different types of music and these preferences often change during their lifetimes. Spirituality is a similar subject of gigantic importance that is similarly not understood. Everyone seems to have their own subjective definition of spirituality and, more importantly, their own path to enlightenment. How do these subjects fit together? The short answer is “extremely well”, but it is not always apparent how this occurs. Past composers of so-called “Classical” music would seem to have touched on it during their composing, and the names of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart are often cited in this capacity. Other composers actually wrote about their spiritual experiences often using expressions such as the “divine spark” or “inspiration” as the words to define their experiences. In the present time, the pianist John Lill and the composer John Tavener believe themselves to be in touch with a spiritual side that is manifested in their music. For myself, I would say that music is a readily accessible pathway to finding one’s own spirituality if it is truly listened to and not used as background sound.
