Interview:
Spirituality, be it portrayed in a negative or positive light, is vastly significant in music. Reason being that spirituality is universal; it speaks to everyone. The subject matter of a particular song may or may not connect with the listener, but one subject that pertains to every human is that of spirituality. Not everyone can relate with partying, death, money, sex, or whatever it is that a particular song speaks about, but spirituality is something that everyone can relate to. It’s more a question of whether or not the listener desires to make that connection. Their willingness to do so does not effect the objectivity of that fact. In regard to what we do in the Metal world, spirituality sits on two far sides, polar opposite one another. The dark side of the spiritual world has been present in Metal from its inception, so purists will tell you that the “light” side has no place in the world of Metal. However, taking this stance is a crime against rebellion itself, especially when the dark side is more acceptable within the “scene”. But regardless of which side of the coin you relate to, spirituality is there. It is a very important element within Metal, and music in general. I would go as far as to say it is the only truly significant element in music, and anyone that disagrees is, again, just ignorant to it, which has no relevance on its objectivity.
