Interview:
I have been involved with music all my life, and have been writing songs for nearly fifty years. I believe that music began in the heart of God, and that is why Heaven is filled with music. We are made in the image of God [Genesis 1:26-27], and so we also create music. The spiritual significance of music is that it can be used for good or evil, because we are so powerfully and profoundly affected by music. There are two trees mentioned in the Book of Genesis that can be used as an analogy regarding music: “the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” [Genesis 2:9]. The tree of life speaks to me of the music that goes straight into my spirit, where I really live, and where the Spirit of God loves to live. That kind of music of many styles, inspires, refreshes, and draws me to God. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil speaks to me of music that touches my soul, mind, emotions, and body. There are good songs from this tree that bless my soul; songs of love, commitment, family, creation, and relationships. Then there are other songs that glorify the baser things of fallen human nature; songs of selfishness, sex, violence, and rebellion against solid values that hold society together. I don’t think that any musical form in itself is inherently evil, but you can soon tell by the combination of words and music what any given song is glorifying. There is great power in all of them. Music is meant to serve us, not the other way around. I have found, over the past fifty years that music is a wonderful, uplifting servant, and a terrible, tyrannical master. When I was eating mainly from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, my songs reflected those values. After my first encounter with the Author of music when I was eighteen, I changed trees, mainly eating from the tree of life. I hope that most of my subsequent songs reflect this. Made in the image of God, our Creator, we can’t help but create things ourselves, especially music. The fruit of what we create depends on which tree we go to for inspiration. Writing this article has sparked off a song, the lyrics are based on Zephaniah 3:17 – “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”
THE SONG OF THE LORD
1. It began in Your heart
The sound that fills the heavens
When did it start?
Only You could know
It was made to be shared
And as You created
You placed it in our hearts
The song that ever grows
Chorus:
It’s the Song of the Lord
The song of Your delight
As You rejoice over us with singing
It’s the Song of the Lord
The song of salvation
As You quiet us,
Quiet us with Your love
2. Before time began
You were there singing
There was music in Heaven
Angels joined the sound
And now here on earth
As it is in Heaven
Worship arises
Listen to the sound!
Chorus:
It’s the Song of the Lord
The song of Your delight
As You rejoice over us with singing
It’s the Song of the Lord
The song of salvation
As You quiet us,
Quiet us with Your love
Bridge:
Let Your song play through me
Words and Music, fill my life
Let Your song live through me
Words and Music, be my life
Be my life, be my life
Song of the Lord
Be my life!
Chorus:
It’s the Song of the Lord
The song of Your delight
As You rejoice over us with singing
It’s the Song of the Lord
The song of salvation
As You quiet us,
Quiet us with Your love
