Interview:

For the musician, the writing and performance of music can be a deeply spiritual act. I believe that there are plenty of artists writing music for the purpose of “career progression”, but in my opinion, this does not represent the heart of the songwriter. For me personally, it has been in moments of complete honesty, when there isn’t a single thought of a song’s marketability, when I have written my most powerful music. It is at times when I feel a song is being written through me when I find a connection and a timelessness in a piece of music. I believe that the audience, whether they realize it or not, are looking for a greater understanding of truth from the artists that they admire. In Melody Green’s book “No Compromise: The Life Story Of Keith Green”, she wrote of Keith’s disappointment, prior to finding Christ, that his songwriting hero Joni Mitchell had no more understanding of the larger questions of life than he did. When the admiration of an audience is coupled with the honesty and integrity of an artist’s exposition of the larger issues, it creates a very powerful platform for spirituality. We have all seen the images of a stadium full of people singing U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. What greater example is there of people en masse seeking truth outside of the church walls?

“I believe that the audience, whether they realize it or not, are looking for a greater understanding of truth nfrom the artists that they admire.”
