Interview:

Pablo Neruda once said that laughter is the language of the soul. To me, music is the true language of the soul and originates from within in order to connect humankind with their spiritual selves. For example, music has been used for worship and other ritualistic ceremonies since the beginning of documented civilization.

Where does this need for song and praise in accordance with one’s goddess or god come from? In my opinion, it is inherent to our nature. This is seen beyond religious ceremony as well. How many individuals have used music as a way to express their distempered opinions and aggressions on societal or personal issues? Sure, there are other forms of expression that can be utilized when trying to relieve oneself of the bitterness and pain we, as human beings, sometimes feel, such as art, acting, or writing. But none of these are quite as powerful as music when it comes to expressing those feelings. I am speaking from experience as a musician and an artist. When I create a painting based on certain emotions, the painting tends to only touch the surface. But when I put those feelings into a song, all of the emotions I’m writing from seem to completely dissolve.

In almost every religion I’ve ever studied, the main tactic for revering one’s deity is delivered musically. I point this out again to emphasize the example of a spiritual belief being expressed through a spiritual language. Sure, the methods of prayer and sacrifice are also practiced in most religions, but those never seem quite as powerful in praise as music does.

This connection between music and the soul was established in secular and religious writings long ago and supported throughout history in many other varieties. For example, in Christianity, Satan was the angel of muse, meaning that it was he who led the authoring of music in the heavens until he tried to overthrow God and was cast out. But when he was finally cast out of Heaven, his musical ability was not stripped from him because it was a part of him that couldn’t be taken away.

This same language is something I believe is centered within all of us. Some people have the talent to express it properly, and some people don’t. Still, music is something that I think all people have a desire to express in one form or another, from humming a small tune to striving to be a great musician, whether or not a person is even aware of it. Finally, I think that music is the only natural language. It contains spiritual roots in the origins of humanity and remains a foundation for enriching our lives and spiritual beliefs on a daily basis.

“Music is the true language of the soul and originates from within in order to connect humankind with their spiritual selves.”
