Interview:
I believe music has the potential to hold a high level of spiritual significance. On the one hand there are plenty of examples in the Bible where music has spiritual significance, and on the other hand I’ve had a number of personal spiritual encounters on account of music. Let’s look at just a few quick examples from the Bible. In Joshua 6:1-20, we read about the Israelites marching around the walls of Jericho with the priests blowing trumpets, as directed by God, and on the seventh day with a shout the walls came down. We also read many other examples where music had spiritual significance, for example when King Saul required David the Shepard boy to play the harp as it calmed his soul and soothed the spiritual oppression Saul was under. Through the psalms we are encouraged to praise and worship God with music as a response to attacks of the enemy. The Bible is full of examples where music is used as a weapon or a tool of spiritual warfare. On a personal note, I’ve had times where I have entered into worship using music and had an impacting spiritual experience. For example, during times of hardship I use music as a means of worship to God, and I then feel His supernatural peace and presence, which surpasses all natural understanding. Music has spiritual significance!
