For Gethsemane, the relationship between music and spirituality has always been at the forefront of what we do. Music is the platform by which we are reminded of what we are in reality, through brokenness, addiction, and loneliness aside from God’s love. Music is the platform to tell our stories. To sing of the battlefield we find ourselves thrust upon daily as we war against all manner of trials and errors, both within and around us. Music has the ability to reach into the very depths of our spirit, and reawaken long forgotten wounds and victories alike. To us music is often similar to a mirror, in that it allows us to remember clearly very significant moments in our lives. Music is a reinforcement of the good things that have been given to us; an eternal glimpse of a moment in time. Due to the undeniable power that music contains, there are constant struggles with ego, selfishness, blame, pride, and hypocrisy, often protected by a siege mentality we create ourselves. It is in this place where a song can break through like a firm slap on the cheek, and the graceful reality of God finds a home in us once more. Where we find our true call, an honorable purpose that refuses to be spoilt by the whimsical emotive choices we chase. Often a song will have a more profound and literal meaning years after it was first written. Lead-vocalist Mat Beltran writes “I sometimes find an emotion raw and deep rise up when performing a song, and feel Gods love for all men. His utter despair and heartbreak for the lonely, lost, and wounded of this world. It may last a second or a whole song. It is in these moments I remember, and these moments that keep me doing what I do”. Bassist Corey Sellwood says “music is the language of the soul, it connects us to other people, nature, and God. Music is a worthy offering to our master”. Finally, we see our music as a reflection of the human condition, of love and victory, both won and lost. A reminder of the hope that is to come, the battle already won, and the pristine and pure graceful love of our God and Lord Jesus Christ. A gift given that the soul may speak the things that the flesh would have us throw into a prison of insignificance and ignorance. Music is our prayer for all occasions.
